BIOLOGY Giant Panda News: As stated elsewhere in the present issue of this journal, Mrs. Ruth Harkness, who secured a live female giant panda in the wilds of West China about a year ago and successfully conveyed it to America, passed through Shanghai about the middle of August on her way to secure a mate for the animal, which is now the chief attraction in the Chicago Zoo. Her report of Su Lin's condition and progress were most satisfactory, and she left with us a series of excellent photographs of the little creature, which we hope to reproduce in our next issue, the present one being rather crowded out with Shanghai War pictures. We regret to have to report that the adult female giant panda, which Mr. Floyd Tangier Smith secured in the same country early in June and was taking to Europe died before It reached Singapore, according to a message from that port. We do not know the cause of this animal's death, but suspect that it must have been due to the great heat to which it must inevitably have been subjected on the route by which it was being transported to Europe. It will be remembered that the fully adult male giant panda, which Mr. Smith secured at the same time he secured the female, died on its way from West China to the port. This double tragedy is a great loss to science, and our sympathies are extended to Mr. Smith, who for many years has been trying to capture a ilving giant panda.
