"There was a very nice race course in Foochow in the old days. Horses were shipped down from Shanghai. Lots of betting and excitement on race days. John's father" (John (Jack) Charles Oswald) "was an amateur jockey. He was also clerk of the course. The races ended long before we came back to Foochow from school." (1926) "The old race course was made into a nine hole golf course. There was also room for about six tennis courts. A very nice club house was later built where you could change after a game and sit on the verandah and watch what was going on. Every Saturday one of the ladieds of the Port would send tea, sandwiches and cakes down for the players or anybody who wanted it."
