U.S. Consulate-General

The earliest United States Consulate General in Shanghai was located north of Suzhou Creek in Hongkow where its grounds overlooked the Whangpoo River.

"The new premises of the American Consulate General, which were occupied on the 1st of August 1911, are located at numbers 13 and 14, Whangpoo Road, and command an excellent outlook on the river to the south. The Consular Jail occupies the second floor at No. 15.
"The present staff consists of: -
Amos P. Wilder, Consul-General. formerly Consul-General in Hong Kong.
W. Roderick Dorsey, Vice and Deputy."

In 1930 the Consulate moved into the "Kalee Hotel" at 181 Jiangsu Road, on corner of Jiujiang Road. From there it moved to the Development Building on the southwest corner of Jiangxi Road and Fuzhou Road (across from the Hamilton House and the Metropole Hotel on Fuzhou Road).

The American Consulate was officially closed on April 25, 1950.
